Part of the way I base my decision to purchase or not is to read the “middle of the road” reviews. Because “reviews” are typically subjective, I use them more as a means of getting an idea for what I’m considering than allowing it to influence my decision to buy or not.
Ordinarily, if reviews influence that decision, is because there is an overwhelming preponderance one way or the other. With many items, especially computer software, there are way too many other “unknowns” that can affect performance After purchasing the Nikon’s “Camera Control Pro 2. I received the disk today and my experience has been no where even remotely close to the negative comments I read.
To wit: 1 “When I bought a new computer, it wouldn’t let me install the program on the new computer using the installation key Having read the comments about the disk being an older program and not a more current version, I did have some reservations. However, in the process of running the install program, it detected that I had a newer version already installed and installation of the disk version was stopping.
I launched the version I already had on my computer, used the Product Key that came with the disk and it activated the newer version with absolutely no issues. That was on my laptop. I did the exact same thing on my desktop system with the exact same results. Both systems are bit running Windows 10 Professional. All three of them, Nikon D, D and D appear to run flawlessly in the newer version of the software on both laptop and desktop. By the way; on the back of the box, the system requirements for using the software require Intel processors those are the only processors listed.
My laptop is running an AMD A6 processor. My only negative regarding the software is the price. Price is a bit high but, if you’re running Nikon equipment, it will behoove you to consider the Nikon software. Top critical review. Amazon shipped me a ten year old version of this software.
The DVD installed version 2. So old that the automatic update would not work. Finally found out that the current version is 2. Downloaded the demo version and fortunately the license key worked.

When I switched from a small historical group’s Nikon D with damaged pixels to my own Nikon D and a new laptop, my old registration number wouldn’t work, not enough characters.
Big mistake, which I won’t make again. I was told to uninstall CCP and ViewNX2, buy a new Nikon memory card although my old one worked fine, use their registry cleaner, and then repeat the process. The software was all downloaded using DSL and I wasted a lot of time on it. I also purchased a new cable early on in the process, thinking that was the problem. At no point, did tech support suggest their 64 bit version could be the problem. My husband suggested the 32 bit version, and lo and behold, it worked well.
I’ll let the real photographers talk about all the features of Camera Control Pro 2, but I can’t take historic ledger photographs without it. Camera Control Pro easily allows me to set file names, determine where the photographs are stored, and all the functions except focusing the camera. Since the Nikon D is my own camera, I still use it for other photographs. I bought Camera Control to shoot Santa Pictures for an event. I put my camera on a tripod and did all focusing and shooting through live-view mode on my laptop screen.
I think I touched the camera once in two hours to change the battery, as shooting tethered in Live View sucked the juice From the capture, I printed to a Canon Selphy and handed the picture to each kid in about 1 minute.
I can also see myself using Camera Control Pro when doing portraits, as the ability to instantly see the image on a high-definition 17″ laptop screen makes adjustments and feedback a whole lot easier than just relying on the 3″ sceen on the back of my D Pierre Tinel Top Contributor: Photography.
It is a great software if you have a use for it. It is not for any camera just some Nikon’s one so be careful to check on Nikon site first.
One person found this helpful. I tried to shoot tethered using Adobe Lightroom, however there always seemed to be issues in the middle of a shoot. Just check the forums and you’ll see many samples. I purchased the Nikon Control Pro 2 software and it works great. I’m still using Lightroom to monitor the folder where the files are being loaded, however I think in the future I will just use Adobe Bridge as I’ve moved my “light weight” retouching to OnOne Perfect Photo Suite Not sure I need Lightroom anymore I wrestled with this purchase and finally decided to buy it for use with my D In researching remote control software I downloaded CCP2 in trial mode for a month and compared it with a purchased version of Control My Nikon 4.
I have not done a side by side feature comparison, that is merely my gut feel. My only disappointment was reading the reviews that told me Canon either includes their remote control software with their cameras or does not charge to download the software. I installed it on a inch laptop running Windows 7. The installation was a bit strange for a current software package. First, I was amazed by the “unknown publisher” on the installation – Nikon can’t afford a digital certificate?
The user interface is the first MDI application I’ve seen in more than ten years and it is really clumsy, with multiple windows doing sort of the same thing. The design shows no evidence of stepping back and thinking about how a photographer would actually use something called Camera Control. To be fair, software’s functionality is pretty much as advertised.
You can shoot tethered and control the camera from a computer. However, the capture and rendering of RAW files feels very slow, which will limit its application. I feel a bit of a chump paying even the excellent Amazon price for such an unrefined package. As some other purchasers have reported, my PC did not insantly recognize the camera when I turned it on after installing the program.
In addition I set the camera to live view so that the mirror was raised and the image was displayed on the monitor at the rear of the camera. Once that was done the pc recognized the camera instantly when it was turned on and the program functioned as advertised.
I’ve been using this for years and bought a new license for another location where I work. It is very effective software but not real slick and cool to work with and thats fine because typically it runs in the background when I shoot tethered to my computer. I use it to set up the camera and shoot to ViewNX2 which is free to download. Its good software for a working pro. Get fast answers from reviewers.
